Personal Development Curriculum Overview

Assemblies

Weekly 30-minute assemblies are delivered every Monday by a member of senior leadership. Years 1, 2, 3 have their assembly 1.30 – 2pm. Years 4, 5, 6 have their assembly 2.30 – 3pm. Each assembly includes a specific focus, link to British Values, a 9-habit focus, a Bible Link and a UN Article. Over each half- term, at least 2 of these assemblies will also include a focus of a specific protected characteristic (e.g. religion). We also adapt our assemblies to respond to the needs of our children and community. Utilising our community partnership we are able to invite visitors (such as our local PSCOs) into school.

Clubs

Our extensive after-school club programme provides pupils with a wealth of opportunities to explore new interests, develop existing talents and build valuable life skills beyond the classroom. With a comprehensive range of clubs on offer (including sports, arts, music, STEM, languages and wellbeing activities) there is something to inspire every child. This breadth of provision enables pupils to discover new passions, strengthen friendships and grow in confidence in a supportive environment. By offering such a diverse selection of clubs, we ensure that all children have the opportunity to enrich their school experience, develop resilience and creativity, and enjoy learning in new and exciting ways.

Trips

Our school trips and enrichment experiences play a vital role in bringing our curriculum to life and creating lasting memories for our pupils. We offer a wide range of opportunities throughout the year, including local visits, residential trips, cultural experiences, sporting events, outdoor adventures and curriculum-linked excursions. These experiences broaden horizons, deepen understanding and help pupils make meaningful connections between classroom learning, our community and the wider world. By providing such a diverse range of opportunities, we enable children to develop independence, resilience, teamwork and confidence, while fostering curiosity, aspiration and a lifelong love of learning.

Chunk Weeks

Five chunk weeks occur across the academic year in addition to Welcome Week in September. These weeks allow us to deep-dive into a specific theme which allows each student to explore their place in the world. These weeks are shown below:

Class teachers deliver this content where lessons are adapted to suit the individual needs of each class. We are very careful not to mutate the curriculum; we ensure the content is relevant for our locality. You will see high-quality, engaging slides which support children’s cognitive load and encourage them to think deeper. Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do meaning that staff respond to the needs of the pupils through inclusive high-quality teaching strategies and make necessary adaptions to independent tasks to ensure each child is equipped to meet the outcome of each lesson.

When looking at our learning journey, each lesson will be evidenced with a WALT on Showbie and you will see a variety of evidence uploaded in our ‘Special Weeks’ folder. We ensure that our Horizons curriculum is utilised – evidence of these weeks can include responses to key questions, cognitive maps, voice recordings, Socrative quizzes, Padlet responses, Talkr videos etc.
